The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has dismantled a major drug trafficking network in Mumbai after seizing cocaine valued at ₹1,745 crore, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday. The operation is being described as one of the most significant narcotics crackdowns in recent months.
The large-scale seizure underscores intensified efforts by central agencies to combat organised drug trafficking and disrupt international narcotics syndicates operating in India.
Major Anti-Drug Operation in Mumbai
According to Amit Shah, the NCB successfully busted a narcotics ring during a coordinated operation in Mumbai, leading to the seizure of a massive quantity of cocaine estimated to be worth ₹1,745 crore in the illegal market.
While authorities have not yet disclosed the exact quantity of drugs recovered or the number of individuals arrested, officials indicated that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests may follow.
Amit Shah Highlights Crackdown on Drug Networks
Reacting to the seizure, Amit Shah said the Narendra Modi-led government remains committed to pursuing a “zero tolerance” policy against narcotics and organised drug trafficking.
He praised the NCB and law enforcement agencies for carrying out the operation, calling it a significant step in the government’s broader anti-drug campaign.
Rising Focus on Drug Trafficking Routes
The seizure comes amid heightened surveillance by Indian agencies over international drug trafficking routes using coastal networks and metropolitan hubs such as Mumbai for transit and distribution.
Officials have increasingly flagged the growing sophistication of narcotics syndicates, which often operate through interconnected domestic and overseas channels.
One of India’s Biggest Drug Seizures in Recent Months
The ₹1,745 crore cocaine seizure ranks among the most significant narcotics recoveries in India in recent months and highlights the scale of organised drug trafficking networks targeting major urban centres. Enforcement agencies have been increasing surveillance at ports, airports, and logistics hubs as traffickers adopt more sophisticated smuggling methods.
Officials believe the latest operation could help uncover wider international supply chains linked to the Mumbai-based network.
The crackdown also reinforces the government’s ongoing efforts to tighten narcotics enforcement and disrupt the financial backbone of large-scale drug syndicates operating across borders.
Why This Matters
Large cocaine seizures of this scale typically indicate the presence of well-organised trafficking infrastructure and substantial financial networks behind the trade. Enforcement agencies say disrupting such operations can significantly impact the supply chain of narcotics entering Indian markets.
The latest bust also reflects the government’s broader push to strengthen intelligence-led enforcement against drug cartels and cross-border smuggling operations.
Probe Expands to Trace International Supply Links
Investigators are now examining whether the seized cocaine consignment was linked to international drug cartels using Mumbai as a transit hub for wider distribution across India. Officials are expected to analyse digital records, financial transactions, and communication channels of suspects to uncover the broader network behind the operation.
Such high-value seizures often lead to parallel investigations into money laundering and cross-border smuggling routes.
Agencies Intensify Anti-Narcotics Surveillance
The latest bust is likely to trigger heightened surveillance across ports, airports, and cargo routes as enforcement agencies work to prevent similar trafficking attempts. Authorities have increasingly relied on intelligence-sharing and coordinated raids to target sophisticated narcotics syndicates.
The case is expected to remain under close scrutiny as investigators pursue further leads and possible arrests.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are expected to release additional details regarding the origin of the consignment, suspected international links, and arrests made during the operation in the coming days.
The NCB’s investigation is currently focused on identifying the full network involved and tracing the intended distribution channels of the seized narcotics.
