Petrol and diesel prices across India remained largely stable on June 1 even after the Central government reduced export duties on petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) under its fortnightly fuel levy review mechanism. While the export duty revision has taken effect from June 1, there has been no immediate change in domestic retail fuel prices, as existing excise duties on fuel sold within India remain unchanged.
The latest decision comes amid continued volatility in global crude oil markets and lingering geopolitical tensions in West Asia, both of which have significantly influenced fuel pricing trends over recent weeks.
Government Cuts Export Duty on Fuel
Under the revised structure effective June 1:
- Petrol export duty has been reduced to ₹1.5 per litre
- Diesel export duty has been reduced to ₹13.5 per litre
- ATF export duty has been reduced to ₹9.5 per litre
The changes are part of the government’s periodic review process linked to international crude oil and refined fuel prices. However, authorities have clarified that the move does not alter domestic excise duties and is therefore not expected to immediately impact retail fuel prices for consumers.

Why Retail Prices Have Not Changed
Although export duties have been reduced, domestic fuel pricing is governed separately through excise duties, state taxes, dealer commissions, and global crude oil costs.
The government has specifically stated that:
- Domestic excise duty remains unchanged
- Retail fuel prices are not directly linked to export duty revisions
- Current pricing continues to reflect broader energy market conditions
As a result, consumers are unlikely to see an immediate reduction in petrol or diesel prices.
Crude Oil Prices Continue to Influence Fuel Costs
Global energy markets remain sensitive to developments in West Asia, particularly around oil supply routes and geopolitical tensions. Higher crude oil prices generally increase the cost of fuel imports for India, which can eventually influence domestic pricing decisions.
Recent fuel price hikes during May had already pushed petrol and diesel rates to some of their highest levels in recent years, increasing pressure on consumers, transport operators, and businesses.
Consumers Also Facing Higher CNG and LPG Costs
Apart from petrol and diesel, consumers have recently witnessed:
- CNG price hikes in parts of Delhi-NCR
- Increased commercial LPG cylinder prices
- Rising transportation and logistics costs
These developments have added to concerns around fuel-related inflation and household expenses.
