A Sad Day for Ahmedabad
On June 12, 2025, at around 2:00 PM, a terrible tragedy hit Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Air India Flight AI171, which was flying to London, crashed just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane, a big Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had 242 people on board—230 passengers and 12 crew members. It fell in Meghaninagar, a busy area near the airport, leaving everyone shocked and sad.
Huge clouds of black smoke filled the sky, and videos shared on social media showed the plane falling fast before hitting the ground. Fire trucks, ambulances, and rescue teams rushed to the spot to put out the fire and save people. Early reports say many lives were lost, with at least 50 people no longer with us, though exact numbers are still being checked.

What Went Wrong?
The plane took off at 1:38 PM but only climbed to about 825 feet high. The pilots sent a “MAYDAY” call to the airport control room, which means they were in big trouble. Moments later, the plane lost contact and crashed just outside the airport. A flight tracking website, Flightradar24, said the plane’s last signal came at 08:08:51 UTC, just seconds after takeoff. It was falling very fast, almost 475 feet per minute.
Nobody knows yet why the plane crashed. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is looking into it. They’ve sent experts to check the plane’s wreckage and find clues. Some think it might be a mechanical problem, but officials say we should wait for the full report before guessing.
Who Was on the Plane?
The flight had people from different places: 169 Indians, 53 from the UK, seven from Portugal, and one from Canada. One well-known passenger was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, which has made this news even more heartbreaking. The pilots, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and co-pilot Clive Kundar, were skilled, but we don’t know what they faced in those last moments.

Air India hasn’t shared the full list of passengers yet because they’re contacting families first. The airline’s boss, N. Chandrasekaran, said, “We’re heartbroken and doing all we can to help the families.” They’ve set up a helpline for anyone worried about their loved ones.
Ahmedabad in Pain
The crash happened in Meghaninagar, a crowded area with homes and shops. The plane hit a building, starting a fire that spread quickly. Fire officer Jayesh Khadia said they sent fire trucks right away to stop the flames. Many injured people were taken to Ahmedabad’s civil hospital, where doctors are working hard to save them.
The airport has stopped all flights for now, so travelers are stuck and should check their flight updates. Gujarat Police have blocked roads near the crash site to help rescue teams work. Police Commissioner GS Malik said, “We’re doing everything to save people and keep things under control.”
India and the World React
This tragedy has shaken India and other countries. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said, “I’m heartbroken by this news. I’m going to Ahmedabad to help with the rescue.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders are also keeping a close watch and sending help.
London’s Gatwick Airport, where the plane was supposed to land at 6:25 PM their time, said they’re very sad and waiting for more news. Since 53 British people were on board, the UK is working with India to understand what happened.
Bollywood stars like Akshay Kumar, Janhvi Kapoor, and Riteish Deshmukh shared their sadness online. Akshay wrote, “Can’t believe this happened. Praying for everyone.” Janhvi said, “My heart hurts for the families in Ahmedabad.”
What’s Next?
Rescue teams are still working to save anyone they can and help those who are hurt. The DGCA will study the crash to find out why it happened, which might take a long time. They’ll look at the plane’s black box, which records what the pilots said and how the plane was working.
Right now, Ahmedabad is full of sorrow. The people we lost, the pain of survivors, and the tears of families will stay with us. India is coming together to support everyone affected, but many are asking how this could happen and what can be done to keep flights safer. Air India says they’ll share more news soon, but for now, we’re all focused on helping the victims and their families.
If you think someone you know was on Flight AI171, call Air India’s helpline or talk to local officials. Let’s keep the victims and their families in our hearts and prayers.
