The National Testing Agency has officially announced a fresh date for NEET UG 2026, nearly six weeks after scrapping the original exam amid a widespread paper leak controversy that triggered a CBI investigation and student protests across India.
What Happened
The National Testing Agency (NTA), with the approval of the Government of India, has scheduled the re-examination of NEET (UG) 2026 for Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The agency confirmed the date through its official social media channels on Friday, May 15, bringing some relief to over 22 lakh medical aspirants who had been left in uncertainty since the cancellation was announced.
NTA’s original exam, held on May 3, 2026, was officially cancelled through a press release dated May 12, 2026 a decision taken with the approval of the Government of India to ensure fairness, transparency, and trust in the national examination system.
Why Was the Original Exam Cancelled?
After the exam concluded, investigations found that a guess paper circulating from Rajasthan and Uttarakhand contained 140 questions that matched those asked in the actual NEET 2026 question paper.
The CBI has registered a case to investigate the leak, and an accused individual, Shubham Khairnar, is currently under transit remand for questioning in Delhi.
On Thursday, the CBI secured the custody of five persons arrested in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak and apprehended two more suspects. Investigators are also looking into the possible involvement of an insider within the NTA.
Key Details for Students
The re-examination will be conducted in pen-and-paper mode. The duration of the exam will remain three hours. The agency is expected to shuffle exam centres but retain students’ original city preferences.
Around 22 lakh students will be eligible to appear in the re-conducted exam. Candidates will not need to re-register or pay any additional fee.
NTA will also refund the registration fees already paid by students, and the exam will be re-conducted using the agency’s internal resources.
Admit cards for the re-NEET are expected to be released in the first week of June 2026.
Official Statement
In its announcement on X (formerly Twitter), NTA stated: “National Testing Agency has decided to conduct the re-examination of NEET (UG) 2026 on Sunday, 21 June 2026, with the approval of the Government of India.” The agency also urged candidates and parents to rely only on official NTA communication channels.
Background: A Recurring Crisis
This is not the first time NEET has been at the centre of integrity concerns. In 2015, the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) which later became NEET was re-conducted after serious allegations of paper leak and unfair practices.
NEET UG 2024 also drew controversy after allegations of paper leaks, grace marks, and irregularities at several examination centres. Following petitions in the Supreme Court, NTA conducted a re-examination for 1,563 candidates who had been awarded compensatory marks due to loss of examination time. That re-exam was held on June 23, 2024.
What It Means for Medical Admissions
Medical admissions, counselling schedules, and seat allotment processes for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSc Nursing, AYUSH, and paramedical courses are expected to face delays until the re-exam is successfully conducted and results are declared.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding the dissolution of the NTA and the appointment of an independent committee to conduct the NEET UG examination going forward.
What Students Should Do Now
Experts advise candidates to continue preparing without changing their strategy. The syllabus and exam pattern remain unchanged.
